    What Some Other Centers Do

How deceptive marketing language is used to mislead patients about spine procedures. Protect yourself by understanding these tactics.

    Deceptive Language

"Laser Spine Surgery" is misleading language used in promotional material from other centers. Many centers perform traumatic access operations with sizeable openings, muscle stretching and tearing, bone drilling, and ligament/joint removal. This healthy tissue removal causes permanent damage and potential Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.

    What is actually done?

"Laser Spine Surgery" is misleading language used in promotional material from other centers, when in fact some of them do a very traumatic access operation requiring a sizeable opening, stretching and tearing muscle, drilling and cutting out bone, ligament and joint also.

The bone, ligament and joint removed is typically completely normal and doing an important job in the spine. Removing it causes permanent damage and may cause permanent symptoms due to this damage (Failed Back Surgery Syndrome).

Laser provides no benefit after the opening is created and is rarely needed in spine procedures.

    What some other centers do?

A case study describes a surgeon's procedure reconstructed from CT scans. The surgeon drilled and removed the left side spine wall and upper joint completely. Key findings:

    • The bone and joint were normal and healthy before surgery
    • Patient had only a herniated disc, treatable without traumatizing normal spine parts
    • The herniated disc itself was not even touched
    • Patient was deceived about "laser and arthroscopic surgery"
    • No laser was actually used
    • The procedure created permanent, unnecessary damage
    • It was called "instead of open surgery" but involved more bone/joint damage than typical open procedures
    • The patient wasn't helped but was harmed by the surgery
